Would You Sell Everything for an Online Romance?

Madeline was recently divorced, lonely and looking for someone to fill that special place in her heart.  Living in a rural town, the number of single men are limited and those that are single are generally single for a reason.  Plus, being a single mom didn’t make things easier.

Turning to an online dating site, Madeline quickly made several online friends, chatted regularly and exchanged emails outside of the dating site with a select few.  One friendship developed further into a phone relationship.  Spending hours on the phone with James, Madeline quickly began to develop feelings for her new friend.  It was more than an expected phone call each evening, it became a part of her life.

James started making plans that included Madeline, including moving in together.  Madeline was receptive and started exploring the options of moving her and her daughter from Canada to the United States.  James was a chef and an investment broker, with a son who was about to start college and had a full scholarship to play baseball in California.  It was the perfect spot to s tart a new life he had told Madeline many times.

Madeline is a professional woman, with several degrees.  Her acceptance of the new way of finding a life partner is common among many professional women and was no big deal when she talked about this with her friends.  She tendered her resignation from her job, transferred money to pay for moving expenses, transferred her investments to James brokerage firm and placed her house on the market.  It was a gigantic step but one that she felt she had to make.

This scenario plays out many times from online dating sites, and in many cases, things work out.  However, in Madeline’s case, she had never met James.  Her only contact was the online dating site, email and phone conversations.  She was trusting and giving this man her entire life to control until she arrived.

Would you do the same?

Here at iMingle.ca we are somewhat suspicious of these types of hook-ups.  They are dangerous.  Madeline has not given herself an out and by being so trusting she has left herself vulnerable.  Her entire life savings and the stability that she has in her current life is being compromised.  Something just doesn’t sound right with this and with all the online dating scams that do surface, this one smells.

Madeline however, is a confident that things will work out.  She says she has to trust her instincts.  She wants to build her new life around trust and feels that her willingness to sacrifice everything is the way to do it.

Would you be able to sell everything for an online romance?
